Chapter 10

“Oh.” Lila leaned in, hurrying towards her husband. “He hasn’t been drinking.”

“Did he eat something different from us?” Vi demanded. Denny was still a good distance away, and Lila had started to rush as well as her heeled shoes would allow. “He didn’t right? We all ate the same food.” Vi put her hand over her stomach and considered. “I feel fine. Are you all right?”

“I’m all right.” Lila nodded.

Denny put his hand on the side of the building and slowly pushed himself upright. She reached him and placed her hand over his forehead. “Denny? Are you sick? Do you need a doctor?”

Denny staggered towards Vi and then shouted, “Get Jack! Get Ham! Quick!”

Vi darted across the grounds towards the tent, racing ahead. Her eyes were on Jack’s head and shoulders above all others. She sputtered to a stop, spraying a bit of dirt as she did. “Jack!”

He turned, immediately ready for whatever it was that she needed. He was still able to pull on the instincts of the soldier to go from calm to alert in a moment. There was alarm in her voice, and he was probably ready to wring Mr. Enders’s neck or something else strong and manly. Then he took in her expression. “Vi?”

“I don't know,” she said quickly, glancing towards Ham. “Denny went looking for some missing wrench, walked into the shed where the auto was kept, came out, vomited, and then called for you and Ham.”

Jack’s curse was foul and it was echoed by Ham who looked at the heavens as if to demand, ‘Why me?’ Violet didn’t know the answer to that, but of late, she was inclined to believe that there were, in fact, mischievous gods, and whoever had been looking their way was laughing into their fists.

“Did he say what it was?”

Vi shook her head. She was sure her face and eyes expressed what she was thinking. In fact, what she’d been thinking the moment Denny had sent her for help. How many times had she been sent for help or sent someone else for help? She looked from Ham to Rita and back to Jack and then admitted, “How could it be anything else?”

She didn’t have to say the word. She didn’t need to see the body to know what that panic in Denny’s gaze meant, any more than Jack needed her to say that there must be a dead person for him to realize why she was so upset.

The fact that Denny had vomited? That meant it wasn’t just a body. It was—it had to be—terrible. They’d seen the easier bodies without such a reaction. Her gaze must have told Jack exactly what she thought because a moment later he groaned, “Damn it.”

Jack stepped around Vi to jog across the grass to Denny. Ham was a step behind, while Vi looked beyond.

Denny had knelt down and Lila had her arms wrapped around him. Vi glanced the other way, noting the men milling around with spyglasses, hoping for glimpses of the racing cars.
